“Simple As I Am”: is a mélange of Adult Contemporary, Pop/Rock, and Country. People who’ve listened to the album, tell me how the songs make them feel good. I like that. Because even though a song may be a sad song, I want it to still touch something in people that resonates with their “feel alive” side.
I recorded and produced the album in my studio, except for 2 songs [one co-produced with Andre Bell and Janice Upchurch (Dru Hill), and Dave Bellecchio (Queen Latifah, Kathy Lee Gifford, Naughty By Nature; the other engineered and co-produced with Brett Talley (formerly of Outset)].

wonderful honesty & sentiment... hypnotic... an appealing quality in [his] voice and in [his] songs that is engaging...– Taxi

People who’ve heard my songs: I am a songwriter, with a sweet, melodic voice, and a knack for writing words that connect with people. People who’ve heard my songs, or seen me perform say my songs and voice style, remind them of artists like James Blunt, SEAL, Coldplay, Peter Gabriel or even Johnny Mathis… and some of my country material (which I usually write and have another singer perform) sounds to them like Shania Twain’s style… I’m humbled by these great comparisons.

Coming to America: I move from Cameroon to the United States for college in 1995. In my sophomore year at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), I began wondering how I could contribute to the lives of others.‘Cause coming to America – that was a big thing, you see? And to me, I had to make the most of it.

How to make the fans happy: After leaving college, and working in chemistry for 6 years, I decided to follow my bliss (songwriting, performing, music). At that time, there was increasing demand from the entertainment industry (film, tv, advertising, and artists), for affordable music services, licensing rates, etc. So I built a music business, Songs From Above (I chose the name to give reverence for my songwriting and music path).

Carol Pineau (BBC Documentary award producer/director), The Russian Chamber Art Society, Washington Chu Shan Chinese Opera, Daniel Villar, Flo Anito, the reality TV show America’s Hot Musician… , are a few people and organizations/companies Songs From Above has provided services for. Building the company, helped me become a better songwriter and performer as well. I now think of how to make ‘the consumer’ (the fans) happy.

Young screaming women* (smile): People who come to see me perform say they really enjoy themselves… - young screaming women*, and men (not screaming (smile)), retired fun-loving men & women, and music-loving children – have connected with my songs; I sometimes teach guitar to kids, and they'll ask me “... can you play your song “Superman” ”? It seems people who generally love positive music, that is fun and meaningful, connect with my songs. I like that. I believe songs should inspire, entertain and have longevity. [*just kidding about the screaming women – I don't really have young screaming women fans – ha ha – well? – or do I?] Now, tell me about yourself …

...Later on, having returned to Cameroon, attended boarding school, led choirs, sang in cover bands, and appeared on national TV, I became quite comfortable around music, creativity, science and math. And I always – ALWAYS – listened to songs: when I was cleaning the house, washing my Dad’s car in the mornings… (the roads in Cameroon, back then, used to get really dusty, and if you didn’t wash your car often, you ran the risk of getting it confused for an oddly-shaped ant hill) or just sitting around, being a teenager. So, given this deep love for songs, I used to fall asleep with the radio on…

You Remind Me (the tribute song to Dr. King) – inspiring the youth: From 2002 to 2003, I wrote and recorded “You Remind Me”, as a tribute song to Dr. King. (Song no. 1 on the CD) While promoting the song at NAMM 2004 in Anaheim, California, I was invited by Deb Bradway, then director of GearUp [Music In Schools Today (MUST)], San Francisco, to use “You Remind Me” as a social awareness tool to inspire 8th Graders in the area schools, and youth in a corrections facility. The kids were moved, and several lives, I am certain, were re-directed towards usefulness.

I then coordinated a program, Support On Suspension, which (you guessed it (smile)) supports and mentors kids while they’re on suspension from school. There I used my entrepreneurial mindset, math and science background, and general drive, to help kids through their challenging suspensions. The program received a
Fairfax County Partnership For Youth Spark Award, and we were honored – “You all serve as a beacon to the rest of the world,” – by keynote speaker Alma Powell, chairman of America's Promise Alliance.
